Dear Sybase User;

Please join us on Tuesday and Wednesday, December 1 & 2, 2009 for the next Ottawa Sybase User Group (OSUG) special event! OSUG's mission is to create a Sybase community in the National Capital area of Canada where users can share knowledge, experiences, and best practices. Users of all Sybase products, including data management, tools and mobility are welcome to attend. This meeting will feature networking opportunities, product updates and a discussion.

For the first time in our history, this will be a two day event hosting many Sybase professionals, 3rd party vendors, user presentations, senior management participation, etc culminating in an event I would like to call the "Canadian Technical Summit". This event will have two streams - one Data Management and the other Development. You will be able to register for either one or better yet, make sure that you bring a colleague with you so that you can cover both agendas. There is even a planned "cocktail reception" on the Tuesday night (Dec 1st). The event will cover subject areas such as: SMS messaging from PB 12.NET, Taking your PowerBuilder applications to the Web; Data Warehousing, Replication, Sybase and SAS, Data Modeling, Database Monitoring and Performance, ASE and PB tools, Product Futures, Mobility, etc just to highlight some key areas. On the Development side we will see evangelist John Strano showing us the latest PB 12.NET from engineering, best practices and another training session. For Data Management we will have senior VP Brian Vink addressing key product futures, Mobility and presentations on comparing various Data Modeling approaches. You will have access to key Sybase technical staff from Canada and the USA to ask questions about Sybase products, interact with users utilizing the same technologies and gain key information into 2010 based products and features.

In many cases, you will be the first people outside of Sybase to see various leading edge products in action, get an in-depth review of its features, see live demonstrations, hear how others have used Sybase products, etc and then get “hands-on” training sessions to boot! But wait, that’s not all – you will get to take home with you free software, door prizes, and special unlimited versions of select Sybase and 3rd party products. This event will be of interest to developers, DBA's, project leaders, analysts, IT managers, consultants, etc who want to see how and why Sybase is now the largest software vendor specializing and focused on mobile information management. We will be showcasing presentations from companies such as: Novalys, Appeon and Bradmark as well just to name a few.

The OSUG Dec 1/2, 2009 meeting will be held in Ottawa at Constitution Square in the double Board Room (down the hallway from the Queen's University MBA lecture theatre). Constitution Square is located at 350 Albert Street (at Lyon) just across the street from the Crowne Plaza hotel. Bus access is right to the door and parking is available at the hotel, in Constitution Square and across the street. The Double Board room is located on the second floor (center) and can be accessed from either the west or east elevators.

Anthony Antonello

Mr. Anthony (Tony) Antonello is an eighteen year veteran of Sybase Canada. Through his years at Sybase, Tony has held many roles including Principal Consultant; District Manager Western Canada, Sybase Professional Services; General Manager, Sybase Canada Sales; and Canadian Technical Manager.

Anthony Robinson

Mr .Anthony Robinson is a Principal Systems Consultant for Sybase based in Ottawa, Canada. Anthony has been with Sybase since 2000. He worked for Sybase's American Federal team out of Bethesda Maryland until 2004, when he then transferred to Sybase Canada. Before joining Sybase, Anthony was a sales consulant with New Era Of Networks and a functional SAP consultant for SLI Consulting Inc.

Christophe Dufourmantelle

Mr. Christophe Dufourmantelle founded Novalys in 1998 and has run the company from that time onward. Before this, he was an Oracle Consultant and also developed for a software department at a French IT company.

John Strano

John Strano is a Sybase Technology Evangelist and a charter member of TeamSybase. He has been using PowerBuilder since 1991 and has authored articles for multiple industry periodicals. John has presented Sybase tools on an international basis since 1997. Over the last 15 years John has developed a variety of PowerBuilder applications from single-user scaling up to enterprise-class, web-based projects.

Just to let you know that I have just uploaded a new PocketBuilder example application that uses the "Crypto" object in the STD Foundation Class framework. The new example is located on the SourceForge website where the newer FC versions are now located. Please feel free to take the application for a test drive. If you like the Cryptography feature and wish to incorporate it into your PK applications, please download the free FC's for PK version 2.5.2 (where the Crypto and supporting components reside) that interface the Microsoft Crypto world for you.

On a related note, the Crypto components have been ported to the Foundation Classes for EAServer and PowerBuilder. This means that you can use the same logic in your Sybase Application Server, IIs Server and PB Win32 and .NET (Winform and WebForm) based applications. The Crypto interface and sample Crypto application were also uploaded this morning for PowerBuilder 11.2 Build 8407. The EAServer's supported are 5.5, 6.0 and 6.1 respectively. The same functionality will be uploaded shortly for PB 11.5.1 (and that will also support EAS 6.2 and 6.3).

Note: The same functionality is being readied for PowerBuilder 12.0 Classic and 12.NET (WPF). Stay tuned for a new PB 12 sections on the SF website with the Beta2 based Foundation Classes and example code being available next week.

PS: There is already a PB12.NET Beta1 version of the CDPlayer (WPF version) on the SF website. Have a look in the "Fun" folder!

I just wanted to acknowledge the tremendous increase in the amount of Blog activity that I have received already this year! I think (and hope) that this is because many Sybase professionals out there have come to visit my site for latest information on the Sybase scene. Since I started my Blog in August of 2005 I have seen a steady increase in unique visits to my site. This year alone an exponential increase at that!

Watch Out Visual Studio

There is a new (old) kid in town that may give Microsoft's Visual Studio a run for its money ... at least in the database oriented application market that is! What I am talking about here is Sybase's new PowerBuilder 12.NET application development system. This new release has been completely rewritten to run underneath the .NET Isolated Shell - the same IDE that Microsoft uses for its own VS product. On top of that ... full .NET integration, support for the Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) features, support for the Windows Communication Foundation (WCF) features, re-factored DataWindow.NET, etc makes this a whole new experience for the PowerBuilder developer. It also opens up a whole new spectrum of .NET development using the developers best friend - the "DataWindow"!

Sybase has also added cool feature items like Visual Interitance for example that even VS 2010 will not have. For a really good look at this new (old) tool I would like to recommend that you read a great article by Yakov Werde on the DevX website - Introducting PowerBuilder 12.NET .

Kinda reminds me of the Eagles song New Kid In Town lyric (just imagine this as a discussion between a Sybase guy and a Microsoft guy) ...

PB 12.NET - Drop#2

PowerBuilder 12.NET Beta1 drop#2 was released to the PB community on August 28, 2009. This is the latest release from Sybase engineering built on August 19, 2009 and indentifies itself as build #4102. If you have already installed the first Beta1 version and (hopefully) book marked the download page, then all you need to do is return to that web page and download all the items again to get the most recent version.

I have now installed this release on XP Pro SP3 and Vista SP2. I would recommend that you uninstall the previous versions of IM 12, PB !2 Classic and PB 12.NET first and reboot before you install build 4102. After the installation, I would also run a manual refresh of the GAC for the DotNet DLL's just to make sure the old ones were replaced and then reboot again. I used this procedure and afterwards my PB 12 IDE's worked perfectly the first time.

This build includes improvements such as: WPF design time enhancement, runtime enhancements, improved migration, WCF proxy enhancements, etc just to touch on some of the highlights. I would recommend that you read the PB120Readme.txt file for a detailed list of the changes after the installation process has completed.

For those of you who are still not on the PB 12 beta program - follow the link at the top of my Blog to register and then enjoy this latest PB 12.NET beta.
